In the midst of the holidays when everyone seems to be kicking back and partying it up, it can be tempting to slack off on your job search. But the holidays are actually a time to up your job search game.
Here are five great reasons why:
- Companies serious about hiring don’t stop being serious just because of the holidays. Companies can have hiring needs any time of year, especially if they have landed a contract, opened a new division, or employees have vacated their positions. Bears might be hibernating now, but companies generally aren’t.
- Many of your competitors are either goofing off, rushing around, or assuming that hiring is at a standstill. That’s not necessarily true.
- On those few days during the holidays when a hush falls over some companies, it’s that much more noticeable when a great resume cries out for attention. Imagine that you’re a human resources officer or the hiring manager for your department. Your office is quieter than usual because of the holidays. You are experiencing fewer interruptions and realize that now is a great time to go through the applicants for that job opening you’re looking to fill. Need I say more?
- With so much partying going on, you have more chances to network than ever. And socializing can be good for your mental health, especially if you’re unemployed. When you receive an invitation to a party or event, treat it as a networking opportunity. If you’re part of a networking group, try to attend if it holds a holiday gathering. Be open with people as to how they can help, but do it in a positive, professional way; if you’re feeling down about your situation, this is not the time to let it show.
- Unemployment benefits have limitations. If you’re receiving Unemployment, you probably can’t afford to kick back. Check with your local Unemployment office to see where you stand.
Bonus suggestions for this holiday season:
- Update your resume. If you have more than one job target, have a resume for each. Your resume needs to be focused to each job you apply for, and having a version ready for each target will make customizing faster and easier. (Hint: take advantage of our FREE resume critique)
- Get your references organized. Make sure their contact information is up-to-date.
- Maintain your social media presence. Particularly on LinkedIn. And check for ways that it can work more effectively with your resume.
