What is a video resume?
A video resume is a short video created by a candidate for employment and uploaded to the Internet for prospective employers to review. The video resume describes the individual’s skills and experience. It also gives the viewer an idea of the candidate’s personality and communication style.
A video resume is used to supplement a traditional paper resume.
I know new technology is exciting–self-driving cars, am I right? But some traditions hold true and a traditional resume is one of them.

But there is no reason why you can’t supplement your job search arsenal with a video resume. A word of caution though, you must be comfortable in front of a camera and produce a professional video that will enhance your chances of landing a new job–not hurt it.
Just like a poorly written resume can hurt you, a poorly produces video resume could cause just as much damage.
Unless you are specifically asked to provide a video resume, you should not feel like you need to go out right now and borrow your friend’s video camera. It’s not a must have for your job search.
Things to consider:
- It should look professional. You don’t need to break the bank, but shaky footage, bad lighting, and poor editing will sabotage your video from standing out, even if the content is excellent.
- Keep it short. Shoot for about 60 seconds and don’t go over 90 seconds.
- Supplement don’t duplicate. Your video resume should not include anything that is already in your resume. It should demonstrate the things your paper resume can’t like confidence, professionalism, and presentation skills.
