Thom Singer, author of various networking groups and professional speaker, wrote an important post for each of us titled Brainstorming Your Goal and Action Plan For 2011.
I know there are tons of books, articles and blog posts about setting goals. But this list of seven steps looks easy and doable.
I know there are different methodologies on goal setting, and many people think they’ll ditch their goal within weeks, but I think it’s an important process to go through. Who knows, maybe this is the year you actually try and accomplish your goals?
I like Thom’s list because it involves other people in a way I haven’t seen before (read Thom’s post for the details):
- Select someone (or a small group) whom you respect.
- Understand the meaning of “confidentiality” and leave your ego at the door.
- Agree in advance to forgo too much small talk or other conversation.
- Have a plan.
- Take Notes.
- After the meeting review.
- Remember that this meeting was not just about you.
(did you read Thom’s post for the details?)
In your 30 minute “slot” make sure you tap into the others, who might be able to see your opportunities and strengths differently, and help you see stuff you might not have thought seriously about.
You can make all kinds of goals (fitness, education, social, etc.), but I implore you to sit down with someone and do this with the focus on your career, for 2011.
WILL YOU DO IT?
