Sometimes you need to turn down a job offer. It happens. It’s usually not an easy decision, but many things need to be considered when making this decision.
This article explores 3 good reasons to turn down a job offer. They aren’t about salary, location, or title – so what are they?
#1. You aren’t vibing with your potential new boss.
You have to be able to get along and relate to your direct boss. Sometimes we just don’t click with people – and that is ok. But listen to your instincts on this one. You will be spending more time at work than you do at home and you have to be able to connect with your co-workers.
Here are some things to consider:
- Did the manager provide a clear picture of the role and expectations?
- Are the responsibilities of the different team members clear?
- Does the manager seem to support the team?
- Do you think the manager will be able to provide feedback, advice, and direction?
#2. Their culture and your values don’t align.
Company culture is a big consideration (or should be) when researching companies to work for. Did you know that one of the most common reasons for not hiring someone is “not the right cultural fit?” It’s also very common for employees to state that the reason they left was a “toxic work environment.”
Were your questions about culture adequately answered?
It is more about finding the right fit for your personality and if you will be happy working there. If you take the time to define what you like and what works for you it will be easier to find a company where you can thrive.
#3. The benefits are not enough.
You know what you should be offered for your industry and title. If they are coming in short, or you have tried to negotiate and they can’t meet your requirements, it is ok to turn down the offer.
- How many vacation days do they offer? Do they roll over? Are employees encouraged to take them?
- Do you have PTO for illness or family emergencies? How many, and what is the policy?
- How many holidays do you get off every year?
- Are there any times during the year when you can’ take time off (“blackout periods”)?
- Are their bonuses?
